Regular Volunteer Shifts
Breakfast Chaperones: We need help in cafeteria during breakfast. Assist students with getting breakfast, finding seats, opening food items, and ensure students stay inside until 8:25am. Multiple volunteers are welcome and can cover one or more shifts per week.
Production Room Volunteer: Teachers send their projects to the production room where a team takes care of tasks like making copies, assembling packets, laminating, and prep for classroom projects. The production room coordinator will train new volunteers. Multiple volunteers welcome.
Library Support: Mrs. Arun needs volunteers for tasks like shelving books, checking books in and out, and putting up bulletin boards in the library. There are also occasional events like Book Fairs and Battle of the Books that require help. Multiple volunteers welcome.
One-on-One Reading Time: Spend time in the classroom one-on-one reading with students. Volunteers will be trained before visiting classrooms. Multiple volunteers welcome.
Clubs and Programs: Before and after school clubs need at least one dedicated parent volunteer and a teacher/staff member. We would love to see clubs return to the McKinley community. In the past we’ve offered: Chess Club, Run Club, Eco/Garden Club; but would welcome any new clubs as well.
Lost and Found: We are looking for someone to manage our lost and found area and help students find lost items. The ideal situation is to have the lost and found area visible during school events, making it easier for families to find their belongings. Regular maintenance will be done, and unclaimed items will be donated before major breaks.
Art Literacy: Art Literacy lessons are presented six times a year at the elementary level, from October to June. If you are a Community Volunteer, you are assigned a classroom at a school where there is a need. You may present the lessons/art projects to the students, or choose to act as an assistant to the presenter. The Art Lit Coordinator will host a training before each lesson. Multiple volunteers needed.
Classroom Volunteer: Interested in supporting your child’s classroom? There are opportunities to help, depending on the teacher and classroom! Reach out to teachers directly to discover what activities you can help with!
BSD Clothes for Kids: Clothes for Kids is a district-run, volunteer-supported program that provides free clothing for students (grades K-12) from families with limited income. Volunteers will assist with sorting, organizing, hanging, folding and helping families find their way around the closet.
Volunteer for Events
Event Coordinators: There are events throughout the year that need coordinators. Coordinators will work with and get support from the PTM Board. Those who don’t want to do lead alone can team up with a friend and take on the challenge together.
Event Prep Team: Help with preparation leading up to the event. Multiple volunteers welcome.
Fun Run: Our biggest fundraiser, Fun Run, needs lots of support. There are different tasks to be done before, during and after the event. If you have a few hours to spare, you can assist with setting up or keeping track of laps our students run. Join us and make a difference! Multiple volunteers needed.
Fall Festival: One of our biggest events of the year, and we need volunteers to run the different stations during the event. There are many activities and games for the students. We typically have volunteers do a 30min time slot: set-up; event stations; cake walk; clean-up. Multiple volunteers needed.
Bingo Night: Help run a fund night of Bingo. Volunteers are welcome before, after and during the event.
Art Night: In collaboration with the Art Literacy team, we will host an art night with different project stations for kids and their families to try out. Each station needs volunteers to help show examples and give instruction or assistance where needed. No art experience required.
Community/Culture Night: We need volunteers to be in charge of different booths where students and families can learn about their community and culture. Help McKinley build a strong community.
Field Day: End of the year celebration put on by our PE teachers. Students play multiple fun activities and games that are set up around the field and in the gym. Volunteers will over see activity stations. Multiple volunteers are needed.
Field Trip Chaperones: When classes go on trips, we need volunteers to supervise students as they are learning outside of the classroom.
Volunteer at Home/Remotely
Family Night Coordinator: Schedule our Family Night Out Events. This is usually a dine out event, but we welcome creative nights outs! This volunteer position can be done remotely.
Box Top/Passive Fundraiser Coordinator: Assist with the Box Tops for Education program, as well as other passive fundraisers, at school. Dedicated Coordinators can greatly impact McKinley’s earnings! Educate families about earning money, encourage families to sign up, and provide updates on the school’s earnings. This position can be done remotely.
